THE GENDER OF WEALTH
I observed something on the 2022 Forbes list of billionaires, there were 12 women in the top 100 richest people in the world. What I found disturbing was the fact that only two out of the twelve achieved the feat on their own, the other ten either inherited it or through a divorce settlement. This means that only two women held their own and made it big amongst the top 100 richest people on the planet. Why is that so? And why isn't there a single African woman on the list of the Top 50 richest women in the world? There are more women starting businesses in Africa than anywhere in the world. 41% of women are entrepreneurs in Nigeria, compared to 10% in the U.S. and 5.7% in the U.K. Women entrepreneurs outnumber their male counterparts in Africa. But African women are nonetheless some of the poorest in the world because they were raised to think that getting married and making babies meant more than creating wealth and becoming financially independent.
